Research on Hero Supersonic and Radial Inflow Turbine

heroI am with 3 students from Engineering Physics Department, Gadjah Mada University has successful build a steam turbine for small scale (450 W). This research supported by fund from National High Education Department (DIKTI), Indonesia. Fund about Rp. 4.700.000 or US$ 500 given us by PKMT (Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa Teknik – Creativity Programme for Engineer Students) programme.

We start the research at March 26, 2007 and conducted in

  • Physics Workshop at Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science, Gadjah Mada University
  • Renewable Energy Laboratory of Engineering Physics Department, Gadjah Mada University
  • Diploma Workshop of Mechanical Engineering Department, Gadjah Mada University

All of team member have a job description and we are working with effectively.

We have procedures to making steam turbine, that are :

  • Read steam turbine and fluid flow handbook, then discussing about the concept, system work, theoretical design and also we ask advice from our advisor.
  • Sketch the theoretical design by AUTOCAD software. We use some asumption and theoretical calculation to determine the turbine size.
  • Market survey – to ensure the material that we need available on the market and not too expensive, we just have limited fund.
  • Give the sketch design and materials to professional man in the campus workshop or laboratory. We always work together with laboratory assistant when making this turbine.
  • After steam turbine and all of equipment finish, then we test the steam turbine performance by using air compressor and steam from our boiler.
  • Write the research progress report and conduct a presentation to jury or representative from DIKTI.

We have test the turbine performance by using air compressor with absolute pressure 6 atm. The test showing : turbine could moving for just few minute because the absolute pressure of air compressor drop rapidly after valve opened. This show that we can’t use air compessor to generate fluid flow for our turbine because air generation rate less than air outlet rate. Then we build a simple boiler for steam generation, but fail because we have limited material that can operate at high pressure.

Next research, we plan using dry steam from small well of geothermal, like on the Geodhipa Electric Company at Dieng, Central Java, Indonesia. Anindonesian paper and testing video about this research available at download page.

    Great idea, can you redesign your boiler for more pressure? maybe an old LPG bottle?
